A retirement home differs from a nursing home primarily in the level of medical care given. A nursing home, convalescent home, Skilled Nursing Unit, care home or rest home provides a specific type of care for its residents. Assistance may include the administration or supervision of medication, or personal care services provided by a trained staff person. Generally, retirement homes are designed for seniors who need minimal to moderate support with their daily living activities. A nursing home may be a good choice if you need a higher level of care temporarily after a hospitalization, but itís anticipated you will be able to return to home or another facility after a period of time. Retirement homes are also called retirement residences. The housing is friendlier to older adults, more compact, with easier navigation and assistance in outside maintenance. Staff is available twenty-four hours a day. The usual retirement home pattern is that each person or couple in the home has an apartment-style room or suite of rooms. Retirement homes are also called retirement residences.
