A nursing home, convalescent home, Skilled Nursing Unit, care home or rest home provides a specific type of care for its residents. A nursing home may be a good choice if you need a higher level of care temporarily after a hospitalization, but itís anticipated you will be able to return to home or another facility after a period of time. More than two-thirds of the states use the licensure term assisted living. A nursing home is a place of residence for people who require constant nursing care and have significant deficiencies with activities of daily living. Nursing Home residents include the elderly and younger adults with physical or mental disabilities. Independent Living Communities enable residents to live as independently as possible, while providing certain services and social activities. Assisted living emerged in the 1990s as an eldercare alternative on the continuum of care for seniors for whom Independent living is no longer appropriate but who do not need the 24-hour medical care provided by a nursing home. Housing arrangements for the future can be a stressful, anxiety-provoking topic for you and your family.
