Independent living is a general name for any housing arrangement designed exclusively for seniors. Retirement villages and retirement communities, unlike retirement homes, offer separate and autonomous homes for residents. Nursing Home residents in a skilled nursing facility may also receive physical, occupational, and other rehabilitative therapies following an accident or illness. A nursing home may be a good choice if you need a higher level of care temporarily after a hospitalization, but it’s anticipated you will be able to return to home or another facility after a period of time. Generally, retirement homes are designed for seniors who need minimal to moderate support with their daily living activities. More than two-thirds of the states use the licensure term assisted living. Independent Living Communities enable residents to live as independently as possible, while providing certain services and social activities. Assisted living is a philosophy of care and services promoting independence and dignity. A nursing home is a place of residence for people who require constant nursing care and have significant deficiencies with activities of daily living. Other licensure terms used for this philosophy of care include Residential Care Home, Assisted Care Living Facilities, and Personal Care Homes. There is a wide range of home care services that can help you maintain your independence within the comfort of your own home, from in home help to day care. Assisted living emerged in the 1990s as an eldercare alternative on the continuum of care for seniors for whom Independent living is no longer appropriate but who do not need the 24-hour medical care provided by a nursing home.
