A retirement home differs from a nursing home primarily in the level of medical care given. An assisted living facility may be a good choice if you need more personal care services than are feasible at home or in an independent living retirement community. Assisted living comes by many names, such as residential care, board and care, or group homes. Assisted Living communities are regulated and licensed at the US state level. Independent living is a general name for any housing arrangement designed exclusively for seniors. Other licensure terms used for this philosophy of care include Residential Care Home, Assisted Care Living Facilities, and Personal Care Homes. A nursing home is a place of residence for people who require constant nursing care and have significant deficiencies with activities of daily living. Assistance may include the administration or supervision of medication, or personal care services provided by a trained staff person. More than two-thirds of the states use the licensure term assisted living. There is a wide range of home care services that can help you maintain your independence within the comfort of your own home, from in home help to day care. Each state licensing agency has its own definition of the term it uses to describe assisted living.
