Assisted living emerged in the 1990s as an eldercare alternative on the continuum of care for seniors for whom Independent living is no longer appropriate but who do not need the 24-hour medical care provided by a nursing home. A retirement home differs from a nursing home primarily in the level of medical care given. The housing is friendlier to older adults, more compact, with easier navigation and assistance in outside maintenance. Nursing Home residents include the elderly and younger adults with physical or mental disabilities. Nursing Home residents in a skilled nursing facility may also receive physical, occupational, and other rehabilitative therapies following an accident or illness. An assisted living facility may be a good choice if you don’t need the round-the-clock medical care and supervision of a nursing home. The usual retirement home pattern is that each person or couple in the home has an apartment-style room or suite of rooms. There is a wide range of home care services that can help you maintain your independence within the comfort of your own home, from in home help to day care. Assistance may include the administration or supervision of medication, or personal care services provided by a trained staff person. You do not need to provide medical evidence that you need a minimum level of care. Senior Housing - find independent and assisted living facilities, nursing homes, retirement communities, and other elderly care. Retirement homes are also called retirement residences. Some facilities provide minor help with medications as well. A nursing home may be a good choice if you need a higher level of care temporarily after a hospitalization, but it’s anticipated you will be able to return to home or another facility after a period of time. Assisted living residences or assisted living facilities provide supervision or assistance with activities of daily living. A nursing home is normally the highest level of care for older adults outside of a hospital. Each state licensing agency has its own definition of the term it uses to describe assisted living. Retirement villages and retirement communities, unlike retirement homes, offer separate and autonomous homes for residents. Assisted living residences or assisted living facilities provide supervision or assistance with coordination of services by outside health careproviders. A retirement home is a multi-residence housing facility intended for senior citizens.
