A nursing home is normally the highest level of care for older adults outside of a hospital. Assisted living emerged in the 1990s as an eldercare alternative on the continuum of care for seniors for whom Independent living is no longer appropriate but who do not need the 24-hour medical care provided by a nursing home. Nursing Home residents in a skilled nursing facility may also receive physical, occupational, and other rehabilitative therapies following an accident or illness. More than two-thirds of the states use the licensure term assisted living. A nursing home may be a good choice if you need a higher level of care temporarily after a hospitalization, but itís anticipated you will be able to return to home or another facility after a period of time. Assisted Living communities are regulated and licensed at the US state level. An assisted living facility may be a good choice if you need more personal care services than are feasible at home or in an independent living retirement community. The housing is friendlier to older adults, more compact, with easier navigation and assistance in outside maintenance. Other licensure terms used for this philosophy of care include Residential Care Home, Assisted Care Living Facilities, and Personal Care Homes. Independent living is a general name for any housing arrangement designed exclusively for seniors. Nursing Home residents include the elderly and younger adults with physical or mental disabilities. The usual retirement home pattern is that each person or couple in the home has an apartment-style room or suite of rooms. Retirement homes are privately owned rental accommodations for seniors who are able to manage and pay for their own care. A retirement home is a multi-residence housing facility intended for senior citizens. An assisted living facility may be a good choice if you donít need the round-the-clock medical care and supervision of a nursing home.
