A retirement home differs from a nursing home primarily in the level of medical care given. Retirement homes are privately owned rental accommodations for seniors who are able to manage and pay for their own care. The usual retirement home pattern is that each person or couple in the home has an apartment-style room or suite of rooms. Generally, retirement homes are designed for seniors who need minimal to moderate support with their daily living activities. You do not need to provide medical evidence that you need a minimum level of care. A place in a retirement home can be paid for on a rental basis, like an apartment, or can be bought in perpetuity on the same basis as a condominium. Independent living is a general name for any housing arrangement designed exclusively for seniors. Generally, retirement homes are designed for seniors who need minimal to moderate support with their daily living activities. Other licensure terms used for this philosophy of care include Residential Care Home, Assisted Care Living Facilities, and Personal Care Homes. A nursing home may be a good choice if you need a higher level of care temporarily after a hospitalization, but itís anticipated you will be able to return to home or another facility after a period of time. Each state licensing agency has its own definition of the term it uses to describe assisted living.

My mother has been a resident at Westminster House for almost three years now. She has moved from assisted living on admission through to Complex Care now. She is very happy there, even now when she cannot see, hear and walk. Staff are kind, attentive and available. They stay in touch with families and are responsive to any suggestions family members have. The newly renovated rooms are lovely. I have looked at other Homes and of the ones I looked at, Westminster House is the best in my area. Interestingly, it was hospital staff who recommended this facility to me. They told me that any patients who are admitted from Westminster House have been well cared for. They were correct. I know my mother is safe and happy. To me, that is as good as it gets.
